About Lyme Disease
Causes and Transmission |
Lyme disease
is caused by a spirochetal bacteria, Borrelia
burgdorferi(Bb), transmitted by the bite of the
Ixodes (deer) tick. Its symptoms vary widely. Most
people bitten by an infected tick have either no
symptoms or flu-like symptoms and a skin rash at the
bite spot. In the acute stage, active antibiotics
treatment can eradicate the bacteria in many cases. 10
to 15 percent of cases result in chronic joint pain and
central nervous system problems. These are the results
of chronic LD, about which have been the center of much
political and academic disagreements. Recently, the
official definition of LD has changed from the CDC’s
reporting definition to a much more realistic
definition.
