Diagnosis
of NASH
Most patients are
non-symptomatic during the early stages. Physical examinations may detect
an enlarged liver. When an ultrasound test is conducted, the sonogram will
show a “bright liver.”
- Chronic
mild gastrointestinal system symptoms and mild elevation of liver
enzymes
- Obesity,
abnormal GTT, high blood sugar, and high blood lipids
- Serum
autoimmune antibodies negative
- Liver
biopsy show large fat sag in the liver cells, sonogram shows “bright
liver”

No history
of heavy alcohol consumption, weekly alcohol consumption < 40g

No
HBV, HCV infection
- No
history of long-term use of steroids or of tetracycline.
- No
malnutrition, no hemochromatosis, no Wilson’s disease
- Biopsy
shows infiltration of inflammatory cells in the portal area and in the
lobes
- Biopsy
shows Mallory body and with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis
Differential
Diagnosis -- Fatty Liver other than NASH
Fatty liver could be a consequence
of many disorders, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease,
malnutrition, and medication-caused (iatrogenic) liver disease, In the
United States, alcohol, obesity, and viral hepatitis are the most common
causes of fatty liver.
